Workshops

Learn. Create. Connect.

Discover the art of traditional Chinese incense making in a relaxed, hands-on workshop. Guided by Liwei, you will explore the techniques she learned from her teacher in Yangzhou, with time to slow down, create and connect with others.

Each session begins with the history of scholarly incense, and an introduction to its aromatic ingredients. Explore the art of seal-shaped incense before making your own incense sticks or plaques, while enjoying Chinese tea and light refreshments throughout.

No experience is needed. With small groups and guidance throughout, you will leave with your handmade creations and a closer connection to the craft.

In every workshop

Seal-Shaped Incense

Included in every workshop, before the sticks or plaques. It is the traditional way of burning incense in its raw form, before it has been shaped and matured, and every seal carries its own meaning.

Workshop one

Incense Sticks

$150 per person

Learn how a stick of incense is actually made, from the aromatic materials themselves through to kneading, shaping and rolling. You will work with natural ingredients, shape your own sticks by hand, and leave with 8g of incense sticks and an understanding of why scholarly incense smells the way it does.

Workshop two

Incense Plaques

$100 per person

Incense plaques are pressed and carved into decorative shapes, then hung at home or carried as a key, bag or phone charm, scenting quietly without ever being lit. In this workshop you will prepare the clay, press your own plaques from moulds, and finish them by hand. You will leave with a 15g incense plaque.
